St. James Town Homework Program

St. James Town Homework Program

Supporting Families in St. James Town

Each day during the school year, twenty-five children from the St. James Town community gather from 3 to 6 P.M. in the Parish Hall at the church of St Peter and St Simon-the-Apostle where they have homework supervision, nutritious snacks and recreation. Children improve their school performance through the program’s dedicated focus on homework support, a direct response to a need expressed by their parents. Also, in response to the parents’ request, we have recently expanded the program to operate for the full day on each of the seven school Professional Activity days when classes are not held.

There is a waiting list of potential students whose parents want to ensure their children are cared for after school when they are working – and at the same time gain support in basic skills. St. James Town is one of the most culturally diverse communities in North America; all the children who participate are from families new to Canada.

A small staff led by a co-ordinator with two assistants manages the program together with a team of dedicated volunteers.

This is a shared ministry of Rosedale Presbyterian Church and The Anglican Church of St Peter and St Simon–the-Apostle, a partnership begun in 2007. An Operations Committee and is composed of members from each church community. The Homework Program Charter of Agreement is available on request.

We are grateful to our other supporters: the East Toronto Presbytery Cooke’s Fund (Presbyterian), the Anglican Foundation of Canada, the Anglican Diocese of Toronto Foundation. The parents provide monetary support at an affordable level.

We are committed to supporting this after school program because we believe it provides an essential service in the community, helping families now, and supporting the development of the next generation.
